Best way to Play Guitar Without Lessons?

Since I’m unable to get lessons, I’m stuck with a Fender Stratocaster I can’t play. I have tried to play by ear (The Wretched By Nine Inch Nails) but find it a tad bit hard. Should I explore the guitar (as in play all the frets to get a feel for it) or just go along with it? I do know the basics such as what the strings are called, easy chords, and the likes. If anyone has advice about any other ways, please tell me.

First off. The strat is a fine guitar. I have 5 and several Jacksons. You can put a humbucker in it if you don’t like the single coil in the bridge position. I learned to play with stuff from this site way back in 1986. They were cassette tapes and books back then. They now are on dvd and very affordable and on sale right now for a package deal. I reccomend the package deal for $215 if you can. If not buy them one at a time as you are ready for each level.

    Play along with simple songs that just involve power cords. Pretty much any Green Day song.

    For the most part…I am completey self taught when it comes to guitar. I play pretty much nothing but power chords and rockabilly type scales. I’m not knocking yer guitar but the Stratocaster held me back for so long. Explore other guitar options and you’ll be amazed at the difference in sound. After years of looking, I found out that hollowbody guitars, no effects pedals at all and Marshall amps suit me perfectly and I can do a whole lot more than I ever thought with that combo. You just gotta find what feels and sounds right to you and it will open you up a lot more. Don’t stop practicing though.

    you can get guitar lesson books at a bookstore if you want. thats pretty much all the advice I can give you. they should have books that can keep you going in learning too. I have a poster of all the chords in guitar. if you know tab (realy easy to learn) you can find somebody who has written down The Wretched By Nine Inch Nails on tab. try searching for "The Wretched By Nine Inch Nails tab" on google. remember not all of the tab is completely accurate online. thats the only way i know how. by the way alot of rock music plays power chords.

    Believe it or not, the "Guitar for Dummies" book is an excellent start – everything from blues to country to powerchords…really

    Youtube is an Excelent Source to teach yourself

    try searching "Next Level Guitar" on Youtube. they are a group of people who have video lessons so you can teach yourself guitar. thats how i first learned how to play guitar
