Is it easy to teach yourself how to play the guitar?

EDIT: my mom said she get me a guitar, but with no lessons. is it worth getting the guitar and learing it on your own or is it too hard and pointless getting a guitar with no lessons?
I’ve been playing the paino for 9 years now. I know how to read music.

My mom said she would get me a guitar for Christmas if I wanted. so should I get one? or is it too hard and it would be pointless to get one without lessons?

ok mate the answer is no. I’ve been playing guitar for 7 years, but for the first 4 i was shit for one of a better word. It wasn’t untill i got a few lessons from a dude who knew what he was doing that i actually learned the tools to teach myself properly. If you do this, you can teach yourself just about ANYTHING. You obviously know music theory which can only help but the guitar is an instrument that needs to be understood in order to play properly. Get some lessons, learn what you need to know to be able to progress by yourself and then you’re home free! keep it real champ

    you can read notation it isnt gonna be hard mentally, physically you mean, it isnt unless your trying to shred it can get tedious, just practice, you basically have half of it down already

    hell yeah you may need help with the chords & that’s it just look up the tabs & play it one part at a time & play it slowly & get faster & faster & the tempo

    Yeah if you learn the basic skills and concepts, with practice it can be easy.

    Your lucky! I really want a guitar for christmas. I say get it! Try something new. It really is different :)

    Hello there.This is how I learned guitar: I watched a guitar dvd, I learned the chords, and then I started. I simply learned songs from Youtube, tabs, etc. I have only been playing since July and I am starting to learn to tap like Eddie Van Hallen. Also, for guitar, unless if you are going to be playing classical music, reading music for guitar is pointless (or if you are going to play in a school band).

    guitar for me was pretty easy. i guess it all depends on how dedicated you are to it.
    i read tabs and just started with easy songs to learn off of like system of a downs hypnotized

    hi there i have been playing guitar for about 4 years now.
    up to my 2nd year of playing ive been self taught.
    i started with not knowing anything, and mostly i would play random notes.
    but as time went on i became more familiar with the fretboard. and from there i was able to make my own riffs and learned some cover songs.
    its definately possible to learn on your own. lots of great musicians are self taught.
    however after my 2nd year i kinda got fed up cause i didnt know how to solo to any of my favorite songs and such. thats when i got lessons and learned my scales so i was able to find the keys of the song and do MY OWN solo to it. thats what makes it fun. but learning the scales takes a long time and my guitar teacher is annoying sometimes. so try learning on your own and keep it fun. then if u find out your not making progress i suggest lessons. guitar is not easy. takes lots of time playing things over and over and over until you get it. and even when thats dont theres still SO much more to learn. but you can do it, cause i was self taught too.
    p.s. if you take lessons too soon. it might get boring and youll give up. so try doin ur own thing for a little
