How do you play the chords in a guitar songbook?

Do you just strum the first chord once until you get to the next one or strum to like the pattern of the song?
Do you suppose to play the notes at the same time? If so, how?
Like how would you play this?

To provide adequate guitar accompaniment to a song it is crucial that the player knows the time signature. Once it is determined to be 2/4, 4/4, 3/4, 6/8, or cut time, the player can then provide the rhythm accordingly.

    Assuming you’re not playing a bass, listen to the guitar player’s strumming pattern and try to copy it. You’re supposed to play just the chords above, and another instrument can play what’s actually on the sheet music.

    Correct… strum the pattern of the given chord to match the music until the indicated chord changes. The rest of the music is for the voice or for piano arrangement, usually.

    This is what they call the ‘score,’ or often, a ‘fake’ book. That is, you have enough of it written out to ‘fake’ the song any number of ways on many instruments. When you get really good, you can start transcribing all sorts of custom arrangements for songs from them. They are really great tools as your ability progresses.

    You need to be able to listen to the song as you work out the strumming pattern, or at least know the song rather well in your head. I’m completely unfamiliar with any Taylor Swift songs. Looking at that page, I can see where the chords are, but it could be a single strum where indicated, or you might continually strum in whatever pattern you hear in the song, strumming the indicated chords. Must ‘music scores’ are written the same way, and treat the guitar as a ‘strum along’ instrument.

    Learn those chords and how to switch between them fluidly, then put the song on and strum along… you’ll get it in a week or two (at MOST!) so don’t worry.
