get him a guitar hero! or rock band for christmas!
these games really resemble a very important part of guitar playing and it could be used as an veryyy veryyyyy non profesional way of learning~! and lots of fun!.
which it can lead for him to get serious and commited bout taking lessons.

i found that i got a WHOLE LOT more out of learning to play just by teaching myself….if you take lessons, you just end up mimicking your teachers style…..and everyone should have their own style
